Party Like a 6 Year Old

It's hard to believe but I now have a 9 AND a 6 year old in the house.  I swear it was just yesterday I found out I was pregnant with my son.  Now my days are crazy busy.  If I'm not breaking up sibling fights, making sure homework is done or taking them to their practices I'm busy running my online store, doing volunteer work or creating something.  Sleep.. who needs it?!

Recently I told y'all that I was the proud owner of not one, but both of my wrists having carpal tunnel and tendinitis.  Unfortunately I found this out about 3 weeks before my daughters 6th birthday.  And I went into a slight panic.  It was bad enough I had a few cake orders coming up that I needed to work on, but I also had my own daughters birthday to plan.  I had school cupcakes and a cake to bake/decorate.  I had decor to make and food to prep.

I refused to let a little thing like carpal tunnel stand in my way of giving my daughter the "Under the Sea" mermaid party she wanted.  The cake was going to be the hardest thing to do since it required a good amount of fondant work.  So I rested up for 2 weeks doing the bare minimum that I could not using my wrists.  And let's just say that's a lot ... you never know how much you move your wrists until they're in a brace and can't move!

I started off early by making a few of the pieces needed.  I made her a mermaid, mermaids tail and #6 out of gumpaste to add to her cake.  I don't know if I have more fun making the pieces or coloring them!

Of course since she's in 1st grade they allow the kids to bring in a birthday goodie to share with others in their class.  I found this really cute mermaid tail mold, so I ended up making 24 chocolate tails!  Purple of course ;)

But of course no birthday is complete without a birthday cake!  And she didn't make this easy on me!  I swear each cake that I do becomes more and more challenging.  My skills are being tested and I love expanding my talent.  So after searching on pinterest for some inspiration we decided on the her two tiered mermaid cake.  I don't like using fondant too much mainly because the taste isn't that good and it makes the cake even heavier.  But in this case I needed the fondant for the scales on the top tier.

Her cake ended up being a french vanilla with a very berry buttercream icing.  I added some rainbow sprinkles in the middle just for an added punch of color.  Several hours of work.. and there were only crumbs left over!  Guess it was a good cake?!

Add in some crushed up graham crackers for the sand, add a few large sixlets as the pearls and some seashells.. and BAM!  Under the Sea Mermaid Cake is complete!

Sadly I wasn't able to make more goodies to add to the table, but my wrists could only handle so much.  The various foods consisted of Gold Fish, Salt Water Taffy, Rock Candy (Coral Reef), Sour Stripes (Seaweed), Sixlets (Water Pearls) and Nilla Wafers with Icing and a Sixlet (Oysters).  So its safe to say everyone left with a sugar high! 😵

I've grown tired of the "standard" goodie bags.  Candy and cheap toys that break within seconds.  I wanted to give her friends something they could actually use again.  I found these cute milk bottles online from Amazon  and glass etched each one with a mermaid and "Mermaid Squad".  Then I filled them with blue sixlets and some goldfish to make them look like water!  Next I bought several bows and glued on a small seashell.  This way the parent could remove the shell if they wanted too.  Throw in a cute little mermaid bracelet, some lipgloss and viola the perfect little girl gift bags!

Of course I can't talk all about my daughters cake and her party favors without posting a few pictures of my beautiful little girl!

Did I mention that she also lost her 1st tooth on her birthday too!!!

Dinner at TGI Fridays for the birthday girl!!  The waitress was super sweet and let her choose from the larger dessert menu since it was her birthday and she lost a tooth!

Olive + Fall

Two things, to me, that go hand in hand is the color Olive and Fall.

It's a beautiful shade of green and looks stunning against all the Fall foliage.  Not to mention I just love the way it looks on everyone!  Whether its a top, a jacket, jeans or even a handbag.  Olive is just so perfect!

Fall is also my favorite time of the year.  The cooler temps are back, so I'm not melting in the 90+ temps, but I'm also not wanting to be buried under a hundred layers of blankets.  It's the beginning of the holidays, the leaves are falling and of course all my favorite shows return!  Yeah I know, I'm a total tv junkie!  But I must confess, I fail as the "basic white girl".  I am so not a fan of everything Pumpkin Spice.  Gasp!  I love pumpkin pie and I love the scent of pumpkins, but I just can't bring myself to drinking it or eating it in my cookies or donuts!

Did I mention that I couldn't wait for my Fall shows to start up again?  I love these shows, but I think I'm most excited about the reboot of Will & Grace.  I started watching that show shortly after my husband and I were married in 2005.  That was back in the day when everyone would buy tv series on DVD, before Netflix was the way to go.  And yes I may have binge watch.  So when I heard the rumor that they were going to do a reboot, I was more than a little excited!  Karen, Grace, Will and Jack are like the 4 best friends everyone girl wants to have!

This is why I love Fall.  It's cool enough for jeans and boots, but still warm enough that I can wear off the shoulder tops!  Last year when I started my online boutique, this top was one of the first pieces I stocked.  And to this day it's still one of my favorites.  The color is perfect and I just love the sheer flow of it.  Looks great with white shorts too 😉  I only have 1 of these left in a size Small.

Now it's time for me to prepare for all my shows coming back.. and maybe baking a pumpkin pie to eat with them!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

What's more American than a baseball game?

I've been to several baseball games since I was a little girl, but it wasn't until a few years ago where I really became a fan.  My husband was watching his team, the Kansas City Royals, and I sort of got sucked in.  Next thing I know I own several Royals tees, a cute hat and I'm yelling at the tv when my team is winning or getting their butts kicked!

I love going to baseball games.  Mainly because it's a sport that I actually understand and can follow!  Much to my husbands disappointment, I still don't understand all the rules of football.

This past week my family and I are were able to attend a Cincinnati Reds vs St. Louis Cardinals game thanks to the USO.  Along with Kroger and Coca-Cola Consolidated they put on a great pre-show for us and told us about their new campaign: "Mini Bottle Message".

We were allowed to enter the game early and go into the "Fan Zone", where the USO had some dancer/singers, a few goodies and of course a mini bottle message for each of us.  Each bottle had a hand written thank you note from random people thanking not only our service members but the families as well for everything they do for our country.  I won't lie, some of those messages really touched my heart.

I learned a lesson this day too.. and yes most of your are probably going to shake your heads and laugh at me.  And I'm sad to say this isn't the first time I've done this.  But don't ever wear new boots to a game!  One you have to walk several blocks (or a mile in our case) and up several flights of stairs and all around the park.  But in my defense the boots were way too cute not to wear!  And hey I've got to break them in some how!

Originally when I went to buy new booties I had my eye on another pair, but when I saw these G by Guess ones I fell in love.  Not only are they super cute and comfortable, but the best part is on the side is a zipper so you don't have to lace them up!  Grab your pair here.

Of course you can't go to a baseball game, or any event for that matter and not take a few selfies!

I'm a little obsessed with this outfit.  One it's simple and clean cut, and secondly it fits in with just about any setting.  The top is long which is great for the tall ladies and these jeans, seriously I can wear everyday.  Shhh  I might wear them several times a week too!  I'm all about tucking in the front of my longer shirts like this.  Mainly because it doesn't look to loose and gives me some shape.  And of course I had to wear these new booties.. and yes I ended up with a couple of blisters by the ends of the night.  But they're broken in now!!

Apple Picking

It's Fall Y'all... well okay not yet, but it's coming!

How is it that I'm in my early 30's and I've never gone Apple Picking before?  Granted I never went Pumpkin Picking until a few years ago either.. but still!

This past weekend a friend suggested that a group of us and our families get together and go to a local farm to pick some apples.  My husband and I have never done that before and we thought the kids would get a huge kick out of it.  Of course this was weather permitting.  The few days leading up to Sunday was non stop cold and rain.  Where's the fun if you're freezing and soaked?!

Thankfully Sunday turned out to be beautiful, a little hotter than we all anticipated, but still perfect.

We all met up at Monnin's Fruit Farm in Dayton.  Its a cute little mom and pop shop that has a nice mixture of fresh fruit and veggies along with some already prepared baked goods and jams.

Naturally you have to take a selfie .. right?!

Anyways, we all gathered together, passed out bags and buckets, hopped back into our vehicles and made our way to the actual area where we would be doing the picking.

We ended up having about 7 different types of apples to choose, Fuji, McIntosh, Honeycrisp, Johnathan, Winesap and a few more.

I don't know who had more fun.. the adults of the kids!

Of course you can't go Apple Picking and not take a group photo with the apples!

I had mentioned earlier that we were only doing this if the weather as nice right?!  Well yes the weather was perfect, except we all dressed for FALL weather and it decided to go up into the mid 80's!  Guess we didn't plan very well.  But I was excited because I had just received a new shipment of inventory in for the Eight-Eleven Boutique and had to wear one of the new tops!

Hunter Boots (Black Matte)
Necklace - Premier Designs Jewelry
Coach Avaitor Sunglasses

I love this new top, its buttery soft and the suede shoulder and elbow patches are so cute.  Plus its light enough to wear now and when its warmer and to layer it up with vests and jackets.  The jeans have been my go to pair for a while now.  They're long enough on me (and I'm a tall girl at 5'9") but they also have a little stretch and of course some distressing!  Of course I'm still obsessing over my Hunter boots my husband bought me for Christmas last year and you can't go to a farm and not wear boots!

Shop this look now from my website:

Skinnies $36 (hurry only 2 pairs left!)

That's all I've got for now, but check back to see what I do with all these apples!!
